CONCRETE FAITHFULLNESS

An image
Of man with beast
Imprinted
Upon concrete,
Each footprint
As clear
As when they walked.
A paw upon a sole
Stamped
As if in molten wax,
A seal of canine friendship.
What greater monument
To such devotion
Stippled
Along a London highway,
Than to be forever traced
Upon a slab clad pavement,
Beneath
A suburban skyway.

THE HAPPENING

The sound of water trickles down a silence,
And through the dark the shadow of a single man
Slides across a sash divided windowpane.

Each plant in silhouette he feeds whilst humming,
His cigarette a burnt out snake of ash upon the floor.

No other room has signs of life just this,
The one he’s filled with ferns and shelves of dust.

His job complete he sinks into the black,
The stairs descending step by step to stop.

The front door swings upon illuminating hinges,
And across the table contents of a woman’s bag
Swims – with the blood of an accident.
